What to Expect During Your First Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Session

Taking the first step toward healing can feel daunting, especially when it involves stepping into an unfamiliar space with unfamiliar partners. If you’ve been considering equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) but find yourself wondering, What will the first session be like?—you’re not alone. Knowing what to expect can ease anxiety and help you arrive with curiosity rather than concern.

At Reins of Valor, we strive to create an environment that feels safe, grounded, and welcoming from the moment you arrive. Whether you’re here to process trauma, manage anxiety, strengthen relationships, or simply reconnect with yourself, this experience is unlike any traditional therapy—and intentionally so.

The Space You’ll Enter

You won’t find a couch or fluorescent lights here. Instead, you’ll step onto a peaceful property where healing happens under open skies, among the steady presence of horses. Nature, movement, and presence are all part of the process. Sessions typically take place in a barn, round pen, or pasture—places where your nervous system can begin to downshift just by being present.

You’ll meet with a trained mental health professional and an equine specialist, both there to support you. The horses? They’re not just present—they’re active participants in the session. No riding is involved. Everything happens on the ground, at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

The First Moments

When you arrive for your first session, we’ll begin by orienting you to the space. You’ll learn about basic safety around horses and be introduced to the horse(s) you’ll be working with. But most importantly, we’ll take time to understand your goals, your story, and what brought you here.

There’s no pressure to perform, no expectations to share more than you’re ready. You may be invited to simply observe the horse at first. You might walk side by side, stand nearby, or gently offer grooming. These seemingly simple interactions open powerful windows into your nervous system, your relationships, and your healing journey.

How Horses Reflect What’s Within

Horses are intuitive, emotionally attuned animals. They pick up on subtle shifts in your body language, your breath, and your presence—and they respond accordingly. This gives you immediate, nonjudgmental feedback about how you’re showing up in the moment.

If you’re anxious, a horse might keep distance. If you’re grounded, they may draw near. This reflection is not a metaphor—it’s a lived experience that allows you to explore emotional truths without saying a word. Often, what takes months to reach in traditional talk therapy can emerge within minutes in the presence of a horse.

Emotional Responses are Welcome

It’s normal to feel emotional during your first session—many do. Some people cry. Others laugh. Some feel a sense of calm they haven’t experienced in years. You may feel nothing at all until later that evening, when the insights begin to settle in. All of it is valid. All of it is welcome.

You’re not here to “get it right.” You’re here to explore, reflect, and reconnect—with the help of a 1,200-pound partner who is deeply attuned to the language of your nervous system.

After the Session

We’ll close the session with time to reflect and integrate what you’ve experienced. You might journal, share insights aloud, or simply sit in silence. Many clients say they leave feeling lighter, more regulated, and surprised by what surfaced.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy isn’t a quick fix. It’s a journey—a relational, embodied, deeply personal one. But the first step is often the most profound.

Ready to Begin?

If you’re curious about whether equine-assisted psychotherapy is right for you, we invite you to reach out. You don’t need to have experience with horses. You don’t even need the right words. Just a willingness to show up.
